Which Doctor Should I See After a Car Accident?

The right clinician depends on your symptoms, urgency, medical history and any evaluation you have already received. For emergency symptoms, seek emergency care. For concerns that can be discussed outside an emergency, contact a qualified clinician for guidance about an initial assessment and any referral. There is no single specialty that every person needs after a crash.

Start with urgency, not a directory category

A scheduled office visit is not a substitute for emergency evaluation. After a head injury, danger signs such as a worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizures or trouble waking need immediate emergency attention. The CDC lists concussion danger signs. That list concerns head injuries and is not a complete emergency checklist for every accident.

If you have already received discharge instructions, follow them and ask the treating team about anything unclear. New or worsening concerns should be raised with a clinician rather than waiting for a directory reply or a law firm to select an office.

Ask who can perform the initial assessment

If you have an established primary care clinician, ask whether that office can assess your concerns and advise on the next step. If the office cannot help, ask how to find an appropriate evaluation. MedlinePlus describes the role of primary care providers; whether a particular office is suitable depends on your circumstances and what it offers.

Tell the office what happened, your current concerns and whether another clinician has already evaluated you. Ask whether it can address that request, whether a referral is required and where follow-up will happen. An office's willingness to accept an injury-related payment arrangement does not determine whether its clinical services meet your needs.

What if I need a specialist or imaging?

Ask the evaluating clinician what a referral is intended to address, how urgent it is and what information the next office needs. Do not choose a test or specialist solely because it appears in an accident-care advertisement. If imaging is ordered, the imaging referral guide explains the administrative questions to confirm.

Should I choose a doctor or a chiropractor?

That is a clinical decision rather than a choice to make from a keyword or a promised claim outcome. Explain your injury history and concerns to a qualified clinician and discuss the proposed treatment, alternatives and risks before proceeding. NCCIH's spinal manipulation information provides background on a treatment some chiropractors and other practitioners use; it does not establish that the treatment is appropriate after your accident.

What does “PI provider” tell me?

PI means personal injury in this context. It describes the type of case an office considers, not a clinical specialty, board certification or guarantee that it accepts a particular lien. Confirm clinical fit and payment terms separately.

Once you know what kind of appointment to seek, explore nearby accident-care offices and use the care-finding checklist to identify offices to contact. Keep a note of who confirmed the location, service and appointment. Read first-visit preparation before a scheduled visit, while leaving diagnosis and treatment decisions with your care team.
